The Place That Not Only Fills Your Tummy But Also Feeds Your Soul
Maybe one of the most unique restaurants in Bali is because they treat you like a friend visiting their home.
Jero Mangku Dalem Suci Gede Yudiawan runs a friendly kitchen called ‘Dapur Bali Mula’ in Les Village. He returned to his childhood village to become a pemangku, or priest but never lost his love for food. Don’t expect a list menu here; everything depends on what the local fishermen catch in the morning, It could be freshly cut tuna or barracuda satay served with sambal matah. Pak Jero cooks everything over a wood fire, using traditional local ingredients and ancient Bali techniques. The setting is just as unique. You’ll be surrounded by large terracotta jars, part of Pak Jero’s ‘arak’ collection. They even make their palm wine using traditional methods.

When we arrived, Pak Jero welcomed us with his big smile, as always. He showed us his new guesthouse called “Kampung Tetangga”, decorated with classic carved wood, one of the things he loves besides food. We enjoyed the ambience while eating rambutan picked from his garden.

Today, they treat us with amazing food: fish soup with Balinese species, a special Lawar made from Java long pepper leaves, octopus, fish cooked in bamboo, and Barracuda satay. Everything has a special taste. Be careful if you don’t like spicy food because they use quite strong Balinese spices. It may sound like sugar-coating words, but believe me, you need to try it by yourself. After the meals, pak Jero invited us to try the Arak, I really like the “Arak Nangka” They cook the “Nira” with jackfruit wood which makes the Arak slightly have a special aroma.

You need to contact them first to reserve a table because they only cook based on the number of reservations for that day, so you can’t just go there as a walk-in guest. For the price, they’re based on a Donation with a minimum donation of 100k / person. Dapur Bali Mula will remind you that food is not just about food; it’s part of the culture and spiritual. It’s a place that not only fills your tummy but also feeds your soul.
